Cleaning Your Dishwasher Filter is Important Maintenance

Many of our appliances today are so great that we forget that they require just a little bit of maintenance to keep them running their best. For example, most people don’t realize that your water heater should be drained annually. Annual water heater service will help keep your hot water hot, and help you get the most life out of your water heater.

Even more surprising for many people is to learn that their dishwasher has a filter! This dishwasher filter should actually be cleaned about once a month. Keep reading our Best Solano Plumber Tips to learn more about your dishwasher filter.

What is a Dishwasher Filter?

Your dishwasher filter is there to catch food waste and grime that comes off your dishes, and keep it from being redeposited on your dishes as they get cleaned. Sounds like an important job! Even if you pre-rinse your dishes in the sink before loading them, there will still be grease, fats, and food deposits that get washed off. While most of it should get washed down the dishwasher drain, the bigger particles get caught by the filter.

How Often Should I Clean My Dishwasher Filter?

As you may now imagine, this filter can get dirty very fast. While some dishwashers have a self cleaning filter, many require you to clean it yourself. Depending on use, this should happen about once a month. A dirty filter will cause your dishes to not get as clean as possible. If the filter is dirty, it is unable to properly trap food waste, and it instead will redeposit on your dishes.

How Do I Clean My Dishwasher Filter?dishwashfilter

If you have to manually clean your dishwasher filter, it is really simple. The filter is located on the bottom, inside of the dishwasher. The floor. You will have easier access if you remove the bottom dish rack. The filter is a cylinder that locks into the floor of the dishwasher. So, you should see a little cap to turn, which releases the filter to be pulled up and out. Remove the filter, which may be cone shape or a cylinder, with a fine mesh filter wrapping around it.

Now, be warned, if you have not cleaned this filter before, you may want to be wearing dish gloves…the gunk build up on this might resemble something from a science fiction horror movie! It will also probably smell HORRIBLE! To clean the filter, simply run it in hot water in the sink, and wash it gently with soap and sponge. You might need to soak it in warm, soapy water first. You can even use an old toothbrush to help scrub it clean. Before you replace the filter, you will want to get a warm wet rag and wipe out the inner cylinder housing of the filter. It will be pretty gunked up in there, so wipe it really well. After that you can replace the filter.
