Garbage Disposal Won’t Turn On

If you flip your disposal switch, and nothing happens, then there is likely an electrical short. On the bottom of your garbage disposal, you will find a red button. This will reset the circuit, and usually does the trick. Simply press the red reset button, turn on the water, and try the switch again.

If that did not work, then unplug the garbage disposal from the outlet, and test the outlet with another device. It may be that the outlet is not working and that it needs to be reset. If it is a GFCI outlet, there may be a “test/reset” button on the outlet. If not, then you will need to check your external breaker box for a tripped breaker.

Garbage Disposal HUMS or is JAMMED

If you flip the switch, and there is just a humming noise, but the blades are not turning, then it is likely something is jammed. First, unplug the disposal, for safety.

On the bottom-middle of the disposal is a hex shaped hole. Your garbage disposal should have come with a hex-wrench, but if you can’t find it, any 1/4″ hex wrench will work. Simply insert the wrench into the hole, and rotate it back and forth. This action manually turns the blades. You may have some resistance, but keep working it back and forth until the item dislodges.

Common things that will jam a garbage disposal include:

  • bones
  • banana peels
  • non-food product (glass, plastic, rubber)
  • utensils (that accidentally find their way in)
  • coins

Garbage Disposal Not Grinding

If the disposal is running, but does not seem to be grinding things up very well, it may be time to replace your garbage disposal. This usually indicates that the blades are dull. A new garbage disposal is usually more cost effective than just replacing the blades. CONTACT Always Affordable Plumbing for a FREE ESTIMATE on a new garbage disposal! Garbage Disposal Tips and Tricks

If your disposal starts to smell:

  1. fill the garbage disposal with ice cubes, pour about a cup of rock salt, turn on the water, and run the disposal. This will help clear sludge out.
  2. Then, run warm water, and grind a 1/4 lemon in the disposal.
