Avoid Common Plumbing Repairs with These Simple TipsHey, we get it. Even if we are Sacramento’s most affordable plumbing company, nobody likes spending money on plumbing repairs. We always try to help our community save money on plumbing. The best way to save money on plumbing is to avoid plumbing problems all together! While some issues are unavoidable, there are some things that can help to prevent a problem. Additionally, while some plumbing issues are unavoidable, catching and fixing them early can save you a lot of money and headache in the future. With that in mind, here are our Top-3 most common plumbing repairs, and some tips on how to avoid them!
Clogged or Slow DrainsThis is by far the number 1 call we get for residential plumbing. Sinks that don’t drain, showers that back up, toilets that don’t flush. When it comes to sinks and showers, slow drains are usually caused by hair clogs wrapped around the drain. These can easily be fixed on your own with this simple, affordable tool! Other times, your pipes get clogged up because of things that you put down them that shouldn’t be put down them. This could be things like toys getting flushed by kids, or non-dissolving products, like paper towels or hygiene products being flushed. The number one culprit for clogging up your pipes though is FOG! This stands for fats, oils, and grease. These get washed down the kitchen sink so frequently, that over time your pipes develop a thick lining of sticky goop. This gunk not only makes your pipes smaller, they catch all kinds of things going down the pipe that can collect into a large, substantial blockage! Don’t want that in your pipes? Don’t wash FOG down the drain!
Running Out of Hot WaterEver notice that your morning shower has started to run out of hot water sooner than you want? Hot water issues are another very common plumbing issue we deal with. This often occurs with traditional tank style water heaters that are a little older. Over time, your water tank collects mineral deposits from the water that is just sitting in there waiting to be used. These deposits will impact your supply of hot water. Often times, these deposits form on the heating element and cause damage. Additionally, these mineral deposits will make your water heater run less efficiently. The best way to avoid this problem is to service your tank style heater annually. That’s right, your tank style water heater should have annual maintenance performed to keep it operating its best. This is a simple procedure that involves draining the sediment and water from the tank once a year.
Leaking Faucets and PipesLeaks are a frustrating and common plumbing issue. This could be a sink faucet that does the ol’ “*drip*drip*drip no matter how much you tighten the handle. Or it could be something more serious, like a pipe fitting that leaks. Either way, leaks are very common and a total headache. Worst of all, they can go unnoticed for a long period of time. Not only does this cost you money, this hidden leak can be causing you expensive water damage! Some reports show that leaks can add up to 10% to your water bill. Avoiding leaks is difficult because more often than not they occur when fittings, gaskets, and seals wear out. However, some leaks just happen as fittings and connections naturally loosen over time. In those situations, taking a few minutes every year to tighten your plumbing fittings and seals can go a long way in preventing leaks. Pay special attention to those connections in areas we don’t often check, such as under the sink, behind the toilet, and in the basement.
