Is it Time to Replace Your Toilet? Here Are 3 Signs That You Should!
Toilets are a mainstay of modern plumbing. While the toilet itself is capable of lasting 50 + years, the components that make it flush and fill generally wear out much sooner. It should be expected that you might have to replace a flush mechanism on your old toilet. However, that is usually a simple repair that costs about $25 to do yourself. It is not generally a reason to replace the entire toilet. Wondering if it is time to replace the throne? Here are our Best Plumber reasons that you should replace your toilet.
Your Toilet is Older Than 25 Years
Toilet technology has not changed a whole lot over the years. However, since the Energy Policy Act of 1992, toilets are required to be more water efficient. That means toilets built after 1994 must not exceed a flush volume of 1.6 gallons. This may not seem like a big deal to you but consider that older toilets have a flush volume of 3.5-5.0 gallons. That means that a new toilet can cut your toilet related water waste in half! Not only is this great for the environment, but it will also save you money over the life of the toilet.
The other issue with older toilets is that the internal components and seals will start to fail, if they have not already. This can lead to a running toilet, or even worse, a leaking toilet. Replacing a toilet component here and there may not be a big deal, but if your toilet is already older than 25 years, then you are probably better served replacing everything at once with a new toilet. This can save you time and headaches of constantly troubleshooting an old toilet.
You Find Water Puddles Around the Base of Your Toilet
Ever find small, mysterious puddles around the base of your toilet? Some people ignore this and think it is due to some bad aim, or some splash from a nearby shower or tub. However, this is usually an indication that you have a toilet leak! A toilet tank can leak from the bottom when the seals corrode. Additionally, there can be a leak from the water inlet hose and fitting. In some cases, there will be a leak around the main floor gasket. A toilet can also have a fine crack in the tank which may be difficult to detect.
Either way, leaks are a major problem! Leaks cost you money, in terms of water waste on your water bill. They also cost you money in terms of potential water damage. Even a small leak can do big damage over time! It is important to figure out the cause of the leak if possible. You might try to retighten the water inlet hose and tank bolts to see if that fixes it. However, if these components are older, and show signs of corrosion or wear, then you are probably better served replacing the entire toilet.
You Have No Flushing Power
Do you find that your toilet requires at least two flushes to fully clear the toilet bowl? Or do you notice that your toilet clogs up way easier than it should? If your toilet is a bit older, then it may just be losing some steam. In order to flush properly, you may need a new tank lever, flush valve, flush valve chain, float ball, or refill tube! Those are just some of the main components that tend to need replacement and/or adjustment over time.
However, many people don’t realize that another important mechanism for flushing are the little water outlet holes that line the rim of the toilet bowl. Over time, these little holes become clogged and corroded by minerals and scale in the water. While it is possible to superficially scrub the outside opening of these holes, it is really difficult to remove all the scale that lines them. At this point, it is advised to replace your toilet and start new.
How Much Does it Cost to Replace a Toilet?
That really depends on a couple of factors. Firstly, there is the cost of the toilet itself. Depending on what style and features you want, you can spend between $100-$400 just for the toilet. You will also need to know what your “rough in” distance is (this is how far your sewer hole is from the wall), and if you want things like an elongated bowl, or ADA height. Professional installation of a toilet will depend on a couple of things, such as access, removal of old toilets, and if you already have the new toilet available.
